The Russian Jack Project was handed to a new planner at Parks and Rec. His name is Brad Dunker and he was involved in the new course at Kincaid so he know a little bit about disc golf. We will be working with him on the design proposals for the Russian Jack Back 9. He is also working with the First Tee proposal to upgrade the ball golf course at Russian Jack. They are primarily looking at upgrades in the northwest quadrant of the park. Our proposals for the Back 9 are in the southeast quadrant. When we first approached the folks at First Tee to install baskets on the existing course they were very supportive and with their support we were able to install the front 9 at Russian Jack by September 1, 2007. Now they need our support for their upgrade proposal. In the past couple of weeks First Tee has been getting slammed in the newspaper and they have received many negative comments about the project, mostly over clearing land for a driving range, access road and parking lot in the northwest corner of the park. While I am no fan of clearcutting or parking lots, I think we can support their project by making some positive comments about the goals they have that will benefit the community as a whole. Here are some of the positive points I plan to submit comments on: First Tee's main emphasis is on 9 Core Values. These are the same core values listed on the new course map at Westchester, please check them out. They are the fundamental values that make golf the great game it is and are sorely lacking in society. Respect, taking turns, giving everyone a fair chance are crucial to a healthy society and they are the main message of the First Tee Program. I think all golfers can get behind that. The folks at First Tee are eager to work with other users of the park to fix the course without excluding anyone where possible. They certainly wanted to help Disc Golf get reestablished at Russain Jack. Without their help it would not have happened. So send any positive comment you can to: Brad Dunker 120 S. Bragaw Anch. AK 99508 or email to dunkerbe@muni.org. You can comment on the First Tee proposal through mid-February. If you have any questions or if you want to volunteer on the Back 9 project or the Russian Jack North project give me a call at 272-0515. play on! timk
